September is California Wine Month, and that makes it a fine time to enjoy a glass of California wine and a visit to wine country. September is harvest time in California and California Wine Month celebrates the state’s ideal climate for wine, beautiful wine country landscape, our talented and ingenious winemaking families, our celebrated lifestyle and cuisine; and our commitment to sustainability and the environment.

2011 is the seventh consecutive year (proclamation pending) that California Wine Month will be celebrated in September. California wine is important to California's economy, as the state is the fourth largest wine producer in the world, makes 90 percent of American wine and is responsible for $18.5 billion in retail wine sales in the U.S."

People often wonder how many grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine. Here are the expanded conversions:

1 grape cluster = 1 glass
75 grapes = 1 cluster
4 clusters = 1 bottle
40 clusters = 1 vine
1 vine = 10 bottles
1200 clusters = 1 barrel
1 barrel = 60 gallons
60 gallons = 25 cases
30 vines = 1 barrel
400 vines = 1 acre
1 acre = 5 tons
5 tons = 332 cases

These are the terms that you might be at a loss to come up with on your own, but the wine tasting wheel helps you refine the search for the perfect description. Here is an example from www.aromamaster.com (click to enlarge):

The more general terms are in the center and become more specific as you work your way out to the edge. Grab a bottle of your favorite Matson Vineyards wine because it's time to practice.

Tasting Room Preview Starts this Weekend

Vintner's Club members,

Starting today at Noon, all Vintner's Club members are invited to stop by the new tasting room. The preview will run two weekends, July 29-31 and August 5-7. Visit anytime between 12pm and 5pm on those days. The following weekend will be the "Pick Up Party", and then the tasting room will open to the public by appointment, however, Wine Club members never need an appointment.

The rain stayed away to give us a comfortable high of 75 degrees for the party. The music piano and bass jazz was top notch. Great futures tasting in the barrel room. We love to see all the familiar faces.

Matson Vineyards at the 2nd Saturday Art Hop Event tonight!

Attend the live KIXE broadcast of the 2nd Saturday Art Hop Event from 6pm to 9pm on April 9th. This free event will feature Marc Cooper providing live music and appetizers provided by Riverview Golf and Country Club. Wine tasting tickets will be $5 for KIXE or Riverview members and $7 for non-members.

New Tasting Room Progress

Tasting bar framing almost complete.

We are excited to see the room coming together. The floors are laid with the trim. The bar framing is getting close to completion. So far, we are on schedule for the planned opening.

The room should debut alongside the new 2008 Tamiko. We are anxious wait to share this new addition with you.

Thank you to everyone who attended and visited our table. Met some new friends and a few new wine club members. The event even raised money for a scholarship to sponsor a horse for a hard working teen. Thanks to the generous business community of Redding there was an amazing array of prizes for the auction. See everyone in November for the next round.

We were blessed with blue skies and great company yesterday for the "pick up party". We are very grateful for all our Vintner's Wine Club members. They have really become the heart of the vineyard.

Matson Vineyards R elease Party

Saturday, May 2! This is the wine release event you do not want to miss. Plan on being among the first to taste the new vintage. As usual, there will be a very eclectic mix of delicious and wine friendly food. Price: $10 entry fee per person. My spies tell me there will be a limited amount of the Aglianico port to sample at this event (not to mention low priced futures availability).

Don't forget our star label this year, TANGO, an exquisite blend of Tannat and Tempranillo. Our newest release is in the bottle and ready for purchase at the release party.
